Experience European Winter Travel At It's Best

Traveling in the European winter is as varied and magical as during the summer time. Although the phrase immediately inspires images of deep snow and ski resorts, there is a lot more to Europe than that. While parts of the north of the continent do have extremely cold winters, and the mountain ranges in the center of the continent boast some of the finest skiing in the world, it is also possible to head south and find mild temperatures and sunshine. In Great Britain, the winter temperatures are held up by the Gulf stream, and you are more likely to encounter rain than snow.

As with any trip deciding what you want to see is paramount. Europe winter travel can give you the opportunity to visit historic cities at a time when the crowds will be less severe, although there will always be a demand for the great tourist attractions at any time of year. It can also give you a break from the extreme cold. If you live in Canada or an American state which experiences very harsh winters, you may have visited Southern California or Florida to get some respite from the cold. You can do exactly the same thing in southern Europe.

A hot spot during the winter is the Canary Islands, which are officially part of Spain. Temperatures remain remarkably consistent throughout the winter, rarely dropping below twenty degrees Celsius. Of course, there will also be crowds of people doing the exact opposite, and heading towards the snow for the skiing and other winter sports which the Alps can offer. If you plan your trip well, you can take in several countries at very short distance, and some great skiing as well.

Traveling throughout Europe is far simpler than it used to be, and the transport system is usually able to cope with the severe conditions of the continental winter. Because there is relatively little of it, the railway companies and the British government have not invested in the protection and snow clearance systems which other countries have had to do. British railways are regularly disrupted by mild snowfalls which would not even trouble a Swiss or Austrian railway.

If the Alps are on your list, there should be no travel problems even if you are seeking a snowbound vacation. Visitors from overseas can also but Euro rail passes which greatly simplify the problem of getting from one place to another. The language barrier will not be a problem in most places. In Switzerland, even the natives speak three different languages, so English is very widely spoken. Now that the logistics have been greatly simplified, there has never been a better time for Europe winter travel.
